Dear Friends:Education Elevated in cooperation with Sherpa Adventure International invites you to the 2012 Rotary Fundraising Trek to Nepal (April 21- May 5), followed by the 103rd Rotary International Convention in Bangkok, Thailand (May 6-9). Thailand is a spectacular destination and truly the Land of a Thousand Smiles. For those who have never visited Asia before, consider this your chance! Bangkok is a fantastic gateway to explore Southeast Asia. The trek to Nepal is a multi-club Rotary public relations and initiative to raise funds to help rebuild the Wongchu Biswa Darshan Junior High School in Nepal and to increase Rotary awareness among non-Rotarians through participation in this exciting international expedition. EDUCATION ELEVATEDThe mission of Education Elevated is to support and promote education and to eliminate economic barriers in primary and secondary schools in needy communities throughout the world. Education Elevated achieves this through hiking and climbing teams who raise financial support for every foot of elevation climbed.Gerri Kier – Founder and PresidentGreetings! My name is Gerri Kier and I am a Colorado native and have been a Rotarian for 17 years. My husband Greg and I have been married for 25 year andwe both enjoy the outdoor adventures Colorado has to offer. Besides spending my summers hiking in the beautiful mountains of Colorado I am a nutrition counselor with Complete Nutrition Alliance and founded Education Elevated. In my journey of life the most amazing people and opportunities have been literally dropped into my path; and trekking in Nepal and helping the school in the Chyangba Village is no exception. I look forward to the lives that will be touched through the efforts of Education Elevated and the blessings that will flow from the trekking trips.Chyangba Village SchoolChyangbaVillage lies at a height of 3500m (11,482ft in elevation), in the northern region of Kathmandu and is approximately 400km (248 miles) away from the city. The village does not lie on the trekker's trail so development has been very slow. Yet the natural beauty and the rich cultural heritage has made this village a unique place on earth. There are about 150 houses inhabited by many ethnic groups such as Sherpas, Rai, Magar, Newar, Tamang, Chhetris, Brahmins, Viswakarma, and Sunuwar. People here are mostly farmers growing potato, apple, maize, wheat, barley, peach, radish, buckwheat, and millet and every Friday, people bring their crops to sell or exchange for rice, tea, salt, oil, butter, spices, and soaps.Wongchu Biswa Darshan Junior High School was established in 1990 with support from Wonghe Sherpa & Goran Kropp, a world famous Swedish mountaineer. The school lost all of its financial support when Mr. Kropp died in a mountaineering accident in Washington state on September 30, 2002. As a result the school has fallen into disrepair and now needs to be rebuilt and your support and participation is urgently needed. TrekkingThe trek lies in the Solu region which is located in a remote area where with few tourists. We will go trek through interesting villages with monasteries, temples and pilgrimage places on and will experience the sites of Mt. Everest, Mt. Makalu, Mt. Kanchenjunga, Mt. Ama Dablam, Mera Peak, Numbur Himal, Gauri Shankar, Dudh Kunda Himal and many other peaks of the region. During the expedition, you will learn about different cultures including the Sherpa culture and you’ll see the many different plants, vegetation and animals. Also, we will visit the Wongchu Biswa Darshan Junior High School and have the opportunity to spend time with the students and meet their families.Camping AccommodationsThe camping and accommodations are fully organized and supported with a team of guides, cooks, sherpas and porters to assist you. All necessary gear; food, fuel and other goods are carried by the porters and the cook will prepare all meals throughout the trek; meals will be served in the dining tent. Trekkers need to carry a small back pack during the day. Your sleeping accommodations will be provided in the form of tents; mattresses, sleeping bags, tables and seating are arranged by staff. A typical day on the trail begins with tea and a full breakfast following by a 2-3 hour trek followed by a break for lunch. After a relaxing lunch, you typically trek another 2-3 hours before we reach our stopping point for the day. During the trek we will have frequent rest breaks which will allow you the time to admire the spectacular mountains, rivers, landscapes, prayer flags, temples, shrines, and cairns throughout the region.Note Regarding Room Accommodations: Conditions are basic and rooms/tents will be single-sex and shared, however, where possible couples will be accommodated. Pem Dorjee Sherpa, two-time Mt. Everest summiter, will lead this 21-day trip every spring and fall. The ancient capital cities of Kathmandu and Lhasa allow you to learn about Buddhist and Hindu culture and the lifestyles and traditions of the people of Nepal and Tibet. The trip starts with a few days in Kathmandu visiting Buddhist and Hindu temples and wandering the narrow, cobblestone streets and markets of the three ancient kingdoms that fill the Kathmandu Valley. Next you will fly over the Himalayas to Lhasa, Tibet. In Lhasa you will explore the enormous Potala Palace, once the home of the Dalai Lama and the former Tibetan government. You will visit several monasteries and temples as well as the Norbulingka, the Dalai Lama’s Summer Palace and the bustling Barkhor Square. A local Tibetan guide will join the tour to offer an expert perspective.Next, leaving Lhasa in a 4WD land cruiser, you will be chauffeured across the Tibetan Plateau back to Nepal. On the way, picturesque Tibetan settlements can be seen and the occasional nomadic herdsmen may be wandering across the dry open landscape. The journey will take you across several high mountain passes with views of the majestic Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, and Makalu (the fifth tallest mountain in the world). Along the way you will visit historic cities and several ancient monasteries, forts and citadels, as well as Everest base camp on the Tibet side. Finally you leave Zhangmu and cross the Friendship Bridge, entering back into Nepal.Continuing the journey, you will visit Pokhara, a town west of Kathmandu, near the Annapurna Mountains in the Himalayas. Three of the ten tallest mountains in the world can be viewed from Pohkara. Spending a day on Phewa Tal, the large lake that reflects the mountains on still mornings or exploring the surrounding foothills will instill a sense of awe. Hike up to the World Peace Pagoda for beautiful views of the surrounding peaks or drive to the edge of a distant cliff and paraglide a few thousand feet above the lake amidst a backdrop of Himalayan mountains, landing smoothly on the road near the city. There is something for everyone in Pokhara.Your trip continues in Sauraha, a town on the edge of Chitwan National Park, the former hunting grounds of the kings in the southern flatlands of Nepal. Climbing in Nepal
Top of Mt. Everest
Located on top of the Chukung glacier between Ama Dablam and Lhotse Mountains, Island Peak is the most sought after trekking destination because of its challenging geographical conditions. Each year more than 300 groups attempt to scale the summit of Island peak. This trek offers an excellent opportunity to climb a Himalayan Summit [6173m] together with an exhilarating Trek to the Everest Base Camp and Kala Pattar. The most difficult section is a mixed rock and ice wall at a slope of around 45 degrees leading to the narrow summit ridge. The magnificent views from the summit, however, are certainly a fitting reward for your efforts. Before climbing Island Peak, we trek up the Dudh Kosi valley from Lukla, passing through Namche and Tengboche on our way to Kala Pattar and Everest Base Camp. After being rested and feeling physically fit and acclimatized, we then head up the beautiful Imja Khola valley towards Island Peak. Besides trekking adventure, we also get to witness pristine Sherpa villages and ever-so-serene monasteries. With ponderous memories of the trekking earlier done, we retrace our route back through Namche to Lukla, and from there on we fly back to Kathmandu. This trip can be done during March to May and September to December.DETAILED ITINERARY Day 1 Arrival in Kathmandu Day 2 Sightseeing of Kathmandu Valley Day 3 Fly to Lukla & Trek to Phakding [2652m]Day 4 Trek to Namche [3450m] Day 5 Rest day in Namche Day 6 trek to Tengboche [3867m] Day 7 Trek to Pheriche [4252m] Day 8 Rest day in Pheriche Day 9 Trek to Lobuche [4930m] Day 10 Trek to Gorak Shep [5184m] Day 11 Trek to Everest base camp back to Lobuche [5357m] Day 12 Trek to Dingboche [4350m] ( Trekkers will trek back to Kathmandu) Day 14 Trek to island peak base camp [5150m] Day 15 Trek to high camp Day 16 Ascent of island peak [6173m] Day 17 Spare day Day 18 Trek to Pangboche [3950m] Day 19 Trek to Namche [3450m] Day 20 Trek to Lukla [2800m] Day 21 Fly to KathmanduDay 22 Depart KathmanduPRICE INLUDES:» Kathmandu/Lukla/Kathmandu airfare » English speaking local expert guide, porters» National Park Fees, Peak permit,» 3 nights’ accommodation at 3 star hotel in Kathmandu on twin sharing room with breakfast.» All guided sightseeing tour in Kathmandu and entry fees. » Airport transfers and escort» Climbing Sherpa» Equipment clothing for porter & staffs, Local climbing Sherpas, » Insurance for all staff & porters, Rope, Icescrow, Snowbar » Oxygen for emergency PRICE EXCLUDES:» International flight & departure tax» Lunch & dinner in Kathmandu.» Personal climbing gears & clothing, (available on hire).» Tips, any expenses of personal nature, client's insurance.
